Sobriety Checkpoints This Weekend in Worcester County

The Massachusetts State Police will be out in force making sobriety stops around Worcester County.

The Massachusetts State Police are preparing to conduct sobriety checkpoints on public roadways in Worcester County tonight. "The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways," said Colonel Marian J. McGovern, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, in a press release. "It will be operated during varied hours, the selection of vehicles will not be arbitrary, safety will be assured, and any inconveniences to motorists will be minimized with advance notice to reduce fear and anxiety." The State Police will be monitoring Worcester County Saturday and Sunday.

Sobriety Checkpoint Yields 11 Arrests

The weekend was busy for the State Police.

If the caseload at Westborough District Court seemed exceptionally heavy Monday, there is a two-word explanation: Sobriety checkpoints. On Saturday, State Police conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Route 9 East in Shrewsbury. This resulted in 11 arrests for OUI alcohol/drugs, State Police report. State Police also issued three criminal summonses and 40 civil motor vehicle citations. Motorists were arrested from a variety of communities, including Shrewsbury, Worcester, Chicopee, Boylston, Newton, Bellingham, Framingham and Brockton.
