Seat belts remain a lifesaver, the chief says.
As part of a nationwide effort to save lives, the Grafton Police Department will be extra vigilant to ensure that Grafton motorists are buckling up during the Massachusetts "Click It or Ticket" mobilization now through June 3. The message is simple: Massachusetts drivers and passengers should always wear their seat belts or be ready to face the consequences. This special crackdown is designed to increase seat belt use and decrease motor vehicle fatalities and injuries. Too many people still have the reckless attitude that a crash will never happen to them. Unfortunately these tragedies can and do happen every day and the best way to protect yourself is by wearing a seat belt. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National …

The writer endorses a Planning Board candidate.
I am writing today to encourage my fellow Graftonites to join me and re-elect Bob Hassinger to the Planning Board. Having had the privilege of serving with Bob on the Planning Board, I have utmost respect for his experience, and knowlege of the finer details of zoning, and MA law in general. He has served as a valuable asset on the Planning Board for a number of years, and I believe that his level of contributions are far from done. His list of experience and contributions is lengthy. To mention, in summery, his participation in Grafton: *Cable TV Oversight Committee since 1984 He was in the first class of producers in 1985, going on to produce the first government related programming for Grafton. As well as actually running the studio …

State health officials want to put restrictions on school bake sales to discourage unhealthy eating habits, but will this hurt fundraising efforts?
Massachusetts state health officials recently recently approved regulations that would prevent bake sales from being held during school and in the 30 minutes before and after school to discourage unhealthy eating habits. Gov. Deval Patrick has backed down on the regulations after criticism from parents and organizations that say putting restrictions on bake sales would negatively impact fundraising efforts for the schools and nonprofit groups, according to USA Today. Legislation passed in 2010 will still require schools serve healthy snack options in the cafeterias and limit sugary foods. In today's poll question, we're asking: Do you think Gov. Deval Patrick should enforce the bake sale ban to help encourage Massachusetts youth to have …

So you have a few days off, and aren't planning to travel? The best place for adults and kids is PiNZ in Milford, according to regional Patch readers.
It's always great to be able to escape for a weekend to an exotic location, a favorite getaway. But sometimes we just need to stick closer to home. Where to go on the next Staycation, when staying home, literally, is not that much fun? Readers in the MetroWest Patches chose PiNZ in Milford. PiNZ has a large video arcade with 30 games, 20 bowling lanes and a full-service restaurant and bar. Something for everyone, it seems. The 40,000-square-foot facility, at 110 S. Main St., is owned by David Breen. "We're grateful for the votes," he said Friday. "We try hard to offer a positive experience for our guests when they're there." PiNZ began life as a roller skating rink, the Skate Palace, back in the 1970s, and was transformed by 2006 to the …

Writers encourage residents to vote for Bruce Spinney.
(Editor's Note: With the election a few days away, letters to the editor in support of specific candidates must submitted by 5 p.m. Saturday, May 12 for inclusion before the election. No letters will be posted on election day. And whoever you vote for, do get out and vote Tuesday.) My wife and I are writing to encourage our fellow Graftonites to join us on May 15 in voting for Bruce Spinney for selectman. We have gotten to know Bruce over the past few years via my own participation on the Planning Board, Super Park Committee, and Agricultural Committee...as well as through meetings/events hosted by the Streetscape Committee which we have been able to attend. Bruce is a very devoted family man and public servant. All one has to do is take…

We want to hear you ideas. Vote in our poll and add your reviews to the listing.
The Best of Patch: Readers' Choice contest this week highlights those local haunts we drive by often, but may have never visited. If you're like me, staycations are sometimes even more fun than vacations—they're usually cheaper by a lot and you never really know what's in your backyard. So, we ask, where is the best staycation in the area? Here are some of our favorite places, but if we're leaving one off of the list, please let us know in the comments and we'll add it: Voting in the poll below is open until 9 a.m. Friday. Because this poll is not scientific, it is not the sole consideration in choosing a winner. The winner will be determined by Shrewsbury Patch editor Jennifer Lucarelli, based on poll results, comments and reviews on …

As scammers get more sophisticated, would-be victims need to be more cautious.
Although I’ve posted warnings to be cautious about fraud and phone scams directed towards the elderly, the Grafton Police Department continues to receive calls and complaints regarding this issue. To help citizens avoid being victimized by these scams, we would once again like to present the following information offered by the FBI at www.fbi.gov and AARP at www.aarp.org. You’re a grandparent, and you get a phone call or an e-mail from someone who identifies himself as your grandson. “I’ve been arrested in another country,” he says, “and need money wired quickly to pay my bail. And, oh by the way, don’t tell my mom or dad because they’ll only get upset!” This is an example of what’s come to be known as the grandparent scam - yet another …

We share the odd, surprising and silly police news from the region.
This week's round-up of odd police news includes a mysterious creature, a coffee theft and a man who was beaten over a $5 scratch ticket. Even for $500, this assault wouldn't have been worth it. I encourage you to read this full story to follow the complicated series of events that led to a Framingham man being beaten over a $5 winning scratch ticket. In short: a man excitedly shares with some folks in the neighborhood the good news that he has won $500 from a scratch ticket. Man goes to redeem scratch ticket; man learns he won not $500, but $5. Man returns home, is attacked by the people he told he had won; they were looking to take his money. Ashland drivers bring silliness to Hopkinton. Hopkinton police received a call from neighboring…
Many animal welfare advocates boycott zoos. Others think they are necessary, and educational. What is your view?
If you want a surefire way to start an argument at the dinner table, and have exhausted all religious and political topics, try bringing up the topic of ethics surrounding animals in captivity. Many animal welfare advocates argue that zoos are unethical, another exploitation of animals for the sake of entertainment. Zoos, though there are varying degrees, they say represent a form of captivity that removes the animal from its natural habitat and deprives it of a life of freedom. For others, the zoo is a place for education, and they argue that it provides people—especially children—with information and an experience with animals they may have otherwise never encountered. Others never think about it either way, but hop on the bus if there's…
