It was a full day of fun and games at Belmont Community School in Worcester when 12 juniors from Grafton High School visited on May 27.
Organized by National Honor Society student Meghann MacDonald, Grafton students ran a Field Day of cooperative games and community building activities. Belmont students were grouped in teams and matched with a GHS student leader who they did various activities with around the school's paved play space.
Activities included name games to get to know one another better, tag games to teach participants to help each other, and problem-solving initiatives which provided teams the opportunity to brainstorm and communicate ideas, respect different viewpoints, evaluate and improve performance.
All the activities were chosen to promote active, fair, safe play in the spirit of a respectful school community. Each Grafton student leader meet with three groups of 12-15 each over the course of the day, starting with a mix of 4th, 5th and 6th graders, then 2nd & 3rd grades and finally finishing the day with 8 classes of 183 kindergarten and 1st grades.
Overall, every Belmont student, 463 in all, had the chance to participate in the fun and learning. Thanks go out to Mr. Pignataro of GHS for allowing the students to volunteer during a school day and the Grafton Juniors who volunteered: Nick Avery, Youki Azuma, Sydney Davis, Tom Flynn, Alicia Glick, Evan Johnston, Noah Kuniholm, Meghann MacDonald, Katie Marlette, and Brendan Nixon. Also participating was Patrick Hunter of Spencer.
