McGovern Fights for Commuter Benefits

Encouraging public transportation has many benefits, the congressman says.

U.S. Rep. James McGovern, D-Massachusetts, visited the Grafton MBTA station this morning to make the case for extending tax benefits for commuters. “It shouldn’t cost more to travel to work than your paycheck,’’ he said, his comments at times drowned out by the rumble of the commuter trains.  Currently, commuters who drive to work and park are eligible for up to $240 in pre-tax benefits per month from their employer. By contrast, in January 2012 commuters taking mass transit such as commuter rail, subways, buses or vanpools saw their benefit drop from $230 to $125 a month. Failing to extend equivalent tax benefits to commuters only encourages people to use their own vehicles, which creates gridlock on the roads, adds to pollution and …

Gas Prices on the Decline

Check out the latest Grafton gas prices.

The price of gas in Massachusetts fell five cents over the past week, the fourth week in a row it's gone down, according to AAA Southern New England. The average price for a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline in the state now stands at $3.71. That's 18 cents lower than a month ago and 22 cents lower than a year ago, the Worcester Business Journal reports. The current Massachusetts price is a penny less than the national average. As of yesterday afternoon, Grafton gas prices at stations on Worcester Street were: $3.73 per gallon at the XtraMart $3.74 per gallon at the BP $3.73 per gallon at Mike’s Car Care Center

It's a Girl! Meet Town's Newest Alpaca

The population at Angel Hair Alpacas grew by one yesterday.

The town's population _ the four-legged kind, anyway _ grew by one adorable baby yesterday. Meredith, one of the Angel Hair Alpacas, gave birth yesterday to a bright white 14-pound cria _ the term for a baby animal in the camelid family. The baby was sire by Template, an award-winning alpaca, so owners Maureen Agley and Jay Cohen are excited that the baby will have his beautiful fleece. Mom and baby are doing well. No names have been selected yet, but suggestions are being accepted. They are looking for a name that begins with M.

Letter Carriers Collect Food Tomorrow

Donations from customers tomorrow will benefit the Grafton Food Pantry.

Now, this drive is an easy one. As easy as putting out the mail. It's even easier, because you don't need a stamp. During their usual deliveries tomorrow, Grafton mail carriers will join in the effort to Stamp Out Hunger, a nationwide effort to combat hunger. Letter carriers pick up non-perishable donations that are left out in, or near, the mailbox on that Saturday. About 50 million Americans — including 17 million children — now live in families that lack sufficient food. The Postal Service, the National Association of Letter Carriers, Campbell Soup Company, Feeding America and other partner organizations are working together to collect food donations on May 12. This is the nation’s largest single-day food drive in local communities …

Regional Readers' Choice for a Staycation: PiNZ in Milford

So you have a few days off, and aren't planning to travel? The best place for adults and kids is PiNZ in Milford, according to regional Patch readers.

It's always great to be able to escape for a weekend to an exotic location, a favorite getaway. But sometimes we just need to stick closer to home. Where to go on the next Staycation, when staying home, literally, is not that much fun? Readers in the MetroWest Patches chose PiNZ in Milford. PiNZ has a large video arcade with 30 games, 20 bowling lanes and a full-service restaurant and bar. Something for everyone, it seems. The 40,000-square-foot facility, at 110 S. Main St., is owned by David Breen. "We're grateful for the votes," he said Friday. "We try hard to offer a positive experience for our guests when they're there." PiNZ began life as a roller skating rink, the Skate Palace, back in the 1970s, and was transformed by 2006 to the …

John Henry Tavern Wins Best Brunch

Don't forget to take Mom out on Mother's Day.

Congratulations to John Henry Tavern at Highfields! They won our Readers’ Choice contest for best place to have Mother’s Day brunch. The tavern is one of the town’s loveliest places to eat, with expansive views of the golf course and the trees. You can eat inside, of course, but, when the weather is nice, the porch is a lovely spot to enjoy a meal with family and friends. Including, of course, Mom. No matter where you take her, make sure you remember Mom! Have a happy Mother’s Day everyone! And don’t forget to vote in our next poll about the area’s best staycations.

Town Seeks More Info on Creeper Hill Land

The land could be used as a combination of recreation and business.

Selectmen agreed last night to seek more information on the possible purchase of a 15-acre parcel at 104 Creeper Hill Road. Sports fields, a Super Park location and a combination of business and conservation land were among the potential uses discussed. Town Meeting would have to approve the land purchase. The town has 120 days to match the existing offer of $350,000 on the land, which falls under Chapter 61B. That gives the town the right of first refusal when an offer is made on that property. Several board members suggested that the town buy the property, sell of the front of the property to a business and then use the rest for recreation. “If you can do both, it’s a win-win,’’ selectman Brook Padgett said. The property is zone for …

Selectmen OK Wine Sales on Common

The wine will be sold and sampled at Farmer's Market.

Despite some concerns raised before and after the vote, selectmen unanimously approved selling wine during this summer’s Farmer’s Market at their meeting tonight. The wine would be sold, and free samples will be offered, during the markets, which will be held from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays from June 28 to Oct. 13 on the Common. The approval was granted to Wade Holtzman of Still River Winery in Harvard and Frank Zoll of Zoll Brothers Private Cellar in Shrewsbury. They were invited to the market because they are certified Massachusetts wineries that use products from local farms to make their wines. Two stipulations were placed on the vote. The chief must be contacted and raise no objection, and any violation would result in their expulsion …

Not taking a stand on whether wine should be sold at the Common but I WILL take a stand on ice wine: Love it! I went to Yellowstone on vacation and, right up there with the beautiful scenery and the wonderful wildlife, including bison right at my car window, was the nightly ice wine I would have while we recapped the day! I will have to check out the apple version...   more ›
