I've never wanted to get up in the morning. And I don't like going to sleep at night. Therefore, I'm a night owl. Every morning when my iPhone's charming xylophone song tells me it's time to get up, the first thing I think is, "I wonder if I'll be able to sneak in a nap today."
Since I've been on the juice fast, every morning when I get up, I still think, "I wonder if I'll be able to sneak in a nap today."
It is the final day of a 10-day juice fast (with a couple of bumps, see below), and I've learned a lot from it.
I want to be one of those people who gets up, circles my curled fists over my wakening eyes, and stretches happily into a new day. I want to throw open the curtain, my arms in a welcoming V toward the sun peering through the window, and feel as happy as the birds that fly free outside.
It's not happening. Those people are foreign to me. Still are.
I've never been a napper, but over the years, I get so exhausted that by mid-afternoon, my brain is mush and my eyes are heavier than sandbags.
One of the predominant reasons I wanted to try this juice fast is that many claimed it created an energy boost ... a clear head and a new zest for life.
A friend of mine who has been inspired to try the fast has been doing some research. She suggested to me that I wasn't heavy enough on the vegetable based juices. The fruit took over. It's true—the fruit is more yummy, and I did favor that. I also haven't curbed my nighttime routine, in that I stay online until my eyelids slit. I should read. I should meditate.
On the final day of my juice fast I am happy to report that I have lost 14 pounds. I had hoped to lose more than that, and thought I would, but I'll take it. And I do feel better.
Full disclosure: out of the ten days, I failed three times. Once, we had a small salad with very light dressing. Once, we also ate one Morningstar Chick Pattie, a scoop of peas and a dollup of squash. And today, I had an apple. Overall, I still fared better than I ever thought I would. I consider it a success and would give myself a B+.
My partner and I plan to do this fast for three days each month in the spirit of detoxification.
As always, I'd love your feedback and tips.
