Dead Animals

Republican candidates have been out of touch with change, but they’re not the only ones that could improve their lifestyles. The presidential election did not return us to the 1950s, but other aspects of our behavior remain primitive. The biggest threat to democracy is corporatism, but that is not the biggest threat to Americans. The biggest threat to Americans is not Iran, global warming, or the economy. Wake up and smell the coffee—it’s what we eat!

The American diet is killing us. The number of people getting cancer has increased from 1 in 33 in 1900 to 1 in 2.5 people today. The US is the country that is ranked #1 for obesity. We were 13 percent obese in 1962 and in 2010 the CDC reported that 35.7 percent of adults were found to be obese. Between 1.5 and 2.0 million Americans die every year of heart attacks, cancer, strokes, etc. The primary cause for a majority of diseases running rampant is the American diet.

There is nothing healthy about “meat." You will most likely die from cancer or heart disease if you eat dead animals. Protein and iron are found in plenty of other foods; foods not full of animal fats. Twenty percent of women and two percent of men are anemic, but that does not make dead animals a healthy choice. Have lab work done when you can.  If you like seafood, you might want to stick with it since it is a source of iron, and the health benefits of the Omega 3s are outstanding.

Do you like to drink milk or eat other forms of cow lactations like cheese and ice cream? Cow lactations are good for turning calves into cows, so what could go wrong? If you consume cow lactations you will most likely die from cancer or heart disease. Furthermore, cow lactations do not prevent osteoporosis, they cause osteoporosis. For more about this, watch “Forks over Knives."

It does sound disgusting to eat dead animals, cow lactations, or chicken menstruation ejecta, but for most people eggs are a healthy choice. I often eat veggie omelets with no cheese for breakfast, or will have a couple of chicken menstruation ejecta salad sandwiches for lunch.

Stay away from breads, pizza dough, and pastas that are not whole grain. High levels of gluten will cause you to feel bloated; with up to eight meals stuck in your intestines. Whole plant foods should be in your intestines, because whole plant foods are full of nutrients. Whole plant foods are what will make you feel healthy. There is no need to put a limit on the amount of whole plant foods that you eat. Eating fiber draws fat out of your body, so the more you eat the skinnier you will get.

At the grocery store, look for whole plant foods that look yummy. Don’t go to the departments of dead animals, cow lactations and sticky stuff. Find things like nuts, grapefruit, whole grain cereals or breads, salmon, or sweet potatoes that look yummy. Try to make a smoothie, soup, or a stir-fry. These foods will make you feel better and give you energy.

Americans need to move “forward” by becoming physically and mentally healthy. To be an American that lives a long healthy life, please mostly eat organic whole plant foods, with no meat, no dairy and low gluten. Yes, that means no more pizza. Go for it, or at least please make sure that you have plenty of life insurance.

I still eat pizza, whole grain crust with tomato sauce and lots of veggies, no cheese.
I agree with most of what you say, but believe fish is still a dead animal and eggs are very unhealthy as a food.

I have gone back and forth on some choices. Coffee is an example of that.
I never found a whole grain pizza dough. Do you make your own pizza dough? My daughter would love it if I went back to making veggie pizzas.

Then there's the water you drink, the air you breathe, you could slip and fall, you could die in a traffic accident, a meteor could crush you, etc etc etc.

In looking at all the ways I COULD go, going out with a happy stomach and taste buds seems the least disappointing way.

And if I didn't have sufficient life insurance, worry not, you won't be tasked with paying my bills. I'll eat what I want, you eat what you want. The end.

Q: How can you tell if someone is a Vegan?

A: Don't worry....they'll tell you.

There are many healthy things about meat. The science that say others don't respect bears this out. Humans are primates, and primate's teeth and digestion operates best as deisgned, Omnivorous.

However, there is nothing healthy about eating too much of anything. Americans eat far too much fat, calories, and simple carbohydrates. Eating too much of any food will harm you, that is why it is called balanced nutrition- offsetting and complementing dietary choices are the best choice.

Best of all, the only thing required is simply eating reasonable portions of a wide array of nutritional sources.. not by excluding entire divisions of diet based upon ideology.

What a great and provocative essay! I think I fall into the middle ground of the debate. I was raised on meat and dairy, like most Americans who grew up in the 1960's and '70's. I tended to be a bit anemic, and NOTHING cured that like a weekly Rib-Eye steak. Then eleven years ago I was on a farm and got locked into a stall with a three-month-old calf, name of Beth. I've eaten almost no meat from mammals since then. Though I do warn my students that if they ever eat bacon in my classroom, and I smell it, I will leap on them like a jaguar and get that bacon, and eat it. I eat a lot of fish now, and poultry. I think the egg is a perfect thing, and hate to hear it referred to as above, whether or not you consume them. I do worry about the sufferings of chickens and turkeys, and so far have avoided being locked into a yard with one. And I can't swim, so I think I'm even less likely to be trapped in a salmon fishery, and risk conversion there. I also think cheese can be very good for you in moderate doses.

But enough personal stuff. My point is that I think each body is unique, and needs to find out for itself what to eat, and to learn to control itself as to quality and quantity. Now back to the wine column...

It's important to realize that if you are healthy enough you will essentially live long enough to die of cancer, heart disease or stroke...That's what will get you...and when it gets you you can point to whatever you want but ironically it's the very healthcare system you will then turn to that has kept you alive long enough to get sick...People need to curtail consumption of unhealthy food, but you can get meat that is not packed full of chemicals...stay away from the steak and cheese sub and try grilled pork or chicken....ground turkey instead of beef....But we do have these pointy teeth in our mouths and eyes in the front of our head because we are predators...and you don't stalk celery stalks...

Part of the healthcare sytem that I am a part of, consists of prevention through patient ed. I think that when people start talking about how natural it is to eat meat, they are just trying to avoid change.
Other than a few insects, chimps eat plants and like humans have flat teeth and eyes in the front. Going down these roads of debate is just a way for you to avoid what you already know. If you keep eating like you do, it will catch up to you before you like. This sounds tough, but I like to keep people out of the OR, off of the med-surg unit, and to have long happy lives.

No argument here that people eat too much meat, but for those of us with a healthy BMI it's annoying to hear the ubiquitous 'meat is death' argument...
Chimpanzees actually hunt and eat monkeys and other chimps. It only makes up less than 5% of their diet but when Jane Goodall discovered that with the Gombe chimps they thought it was a mistake...but observation revealed that they do indeed hunt and eat meat...And man and his genealogical predecessors have actively hunted meat for over 2 million years..and scavenged meat for 3 million before that...Granted it's not ideal to have meat be 75% of your diet, vegetarianism and the more extreme vegan diet are both not natural diets for a human. Look at how hard a menstruating woman has to work to fight off anemia with non-animal sources of iron...when 4oz of meat rich in heme-iron will do the trick.

chimps eat other chimps for 1% (when they are starving) not 5%
man has smoked for a long time also, but that does not make it healthy
Yes, be careful (I get lab work done every year) with iron
All this talk for most people is just avoiding what they already know, that your diet needs to improve in a major way.

Don, the issue that many have is that many people who choose this lifestyle frequently are not willing to accommodate facts in the face of their ideology based beliefs. You feel strongly, but making a claim that cannot be supported by nutritional science isn't about feelings.. it's about calories, fats, carbohydrates and other nutrients.

I think it's fine when folks choose a particular path based upon an ideology- but that ideology isn't objective. When folks read statements that are obviously unsupportable ("There is nothing healthy about meat. You will most likely die from cancer or heart disease if you eat dead animals.", above, for example) you lose your entire potential audience (in my opinion) except for the other members willing to use that kind of hyperbole. It turns people off, it comes across as punitive- and particularly when it's simply not true, I think you are losing more than gaining when those kind of remarks are presented.

not ideology, my goal is to keep you out of the OR or off the med-surg unit....over 20 years of working with preventative med as a part of my job....most people know that they should change thier diet in a major way........good luck
