Exhibit Showcases South Grafton Mills

The exhibit opens Saturday.

The Grafton Historical Society announces the opening of an extensive exhibit on the great textile mills of South Grafton. The free exhibit opens from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the society museum at 1 Grafton Common. “The Fisherville, Farnumsville, and Saundersville textile mills are central to the history and character of our town and to the industrial heritage of the Blackstone River Valley,” said Linda Casey, Grafton Historical Society president, in a prepared statement. “With this exhibit, we are preserving their very important legacy and giving our mills the place of honor which they deserve.” The mill exhibit is the culmination of a project two years in the making. Grafton Youth in Diverse Dance Program

Performances are tomorrow and Sunday.

Hope Msumba, a resident of South Grafton and student of the Patricia Brosnihan Dance Center in South Grafton, will perform this weekend in Dance Company Worcester’s Project 7 at Millbury High School, 12 Martin St. The show features small groups doing dances from all genres and types, showcasing the talent and diversity of Worcester County. Performances will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 5 and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 6. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.  For advance tickets, call 774-287-1753

Middle School Performs 'High School Musical'

The performances will be presented May 4 and 5.

Grafton Middle School students will bring Disney’s smash hit movie "High School Musical'' to the stage on May 4 and 5.  More than 50 students cast as jocks, braniacs, thespians, skater dudes, and cheerleaders, will be performing popular songs such as "Start of Something New,'' "Get’cha Head in the Game" and "We’re All in This Together. Under the direction of Lisa Scarlett, "High School Musical" tells the uplifting story of what happens when students break away from stereotypes and explore new interests. Jacob Welch and Amelia Murray play Troy and Gabriella, students who cross the lines of their "cliques" and dare to be different. Grafton Native Writes First Novel

The adult urban fantasy novel will be released as an ebook today.

Local writer and teacher, Grafton native Lauren Grimley, is now releasing her debut novel Unforeseen as an e-book. The novel, available today, is the first in a planned series of adult urban fantasy books.  The story, set in the fictional city of Bristol, Massachusetts, includes a strong heroine, plenty of action, a healthy dose of romance, and, of course, some vampires.  Unforeseen fits the category of vampire books that have become popular in recent years, but she said it offers some unique differences.  "Most of the urban fantasy books I read had either male heroes or had female characters hyper-focused on their romantic lives,” she said. Pirates Treasure TIme on Stage

Grafton youngsters will perform Saturday.

Apple Tree Arts is staging a show at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Alternatives, 50 Douglas Rd., Whitinsville. The mini-musical is called "Pirates.'' Five of the 10 cast members are from Grafton. The children are elementary-school age.

'Pain is a Lonely Thing'

Author shares her spiritual and emotional journey from pain to peace.

Kathleen O’Malley always believed she could have anything she wanted. As a wife, mother of a young daughter and successful businesswoman, she had no reason to doubt that. Wanting a second child seemed the most natural step in her lives. “Our lives couldn’t have been more perfect,’’ she said. But as she was to learn, life does not always deliver what we expect. Her effort to have a second child led to two early miscarriages, followed by the loss of a daughter in her 22nd week of pregnancy. Then she gave birth to Jade. Sit for a Spell and Bee Entertained

The spelling bee is set for April 6.

The Grafton Education Alliance Community Spelling Bee and Raffle will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 6 at Grafton High School. Admission is $2 per adult and $1 for seniors and kids age 7 and older. In addition to cheering on their favorite spelling bee team, those attending can also enjoy food offerings and purchase raffle tickets for a variety of items, including: An Apple iPod touch 8GB* MP3 Player (4th Generation - latest model), tickets to Bill Cosby at the Hanover Theatre, a three-month family YMCA membership and two passes to Silver Lake Beach. 'Cinderella' Takes to the Stage

Apple Tree Arts will stage its spring show tonight and tomorrow.

Apple Tree Arts’ spring show “Disney’s Cinderella Kids” will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24 at Northbridge Middle School, 171 Linwood Ave., Whitinsville. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors and free for children four and under.  Tickets will be sold at the door.  The show tells the timeless fairy tale about poor Cinderella’s mistreatment by her stepmother and stepsisters. This special adaptation of the animated Disney film is ideal for students in grades two to five. Actors are from Grafton, Northbridge, Shrewsbury and Millbury. Want More Fun? See 'Legally Blonde'

The production will be presented next week at Grafton High School.

Grafton High School will become one of the first schools in the country to produce “Legally Blonde’’ when the lively musical hits the stage next week. The production follows underestimated blonde and sorority star Elle Woods, played by Merry Ryer. When Elle's boyfriend Warner, played by Henry Edwards, dumps her for someone more "serious," Elle decides to win him back by hitting the books at Harvard Law, much to everyone's surprise. While at Harvard, Elle meets Emmett Forrest, played by Rocco Praderio. Emmet is a smart, sensitive, and good-looking law student who takes Elle under his wing.  Elle also meets Vivienne, played by Megan Elsier.
