Woman Charged with Severely Injuring Baby

April Grandinetti, who runs a home day care, faces charges.

A South Grafton woman faces charges of severely injuring a baby in her care.

April Grandinetti, 38, of 22 Maple Ave., South Grafton, was indicted by the Worcester County Grand Jury on charges of assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and assault and battery on a child with substantial injury.

The baby’s injuries reportedly included bleeding around the brain and eye and a detached retina, said Timothy Connolly, spokesman for Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

The charges stem from an incident Jan. 13, when Grandinetti flagged down a Northbridge police officer outside her home day care center at 22 Maple Ave., Connolly said.

She was walking down the road, holding a baby in her arms, Connolly said. Her day care center is located near the Northbridge town line.

She told the officer she was caring for the baby when she observed him in his bassinet having difficulty breathing and foaming bubbles around his mouth, Connolly said.

The officer observed the baby was lethargic and was having difficulty breathing, Connolly said.

The child was taken to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, where staff members of the Child Protection Program assessed his injuries and determined they were inflicted and not accidental, Connolly said.

Connolly would not release any further information on the baby’s current condition.

Grandinetti surrendered her state-issued day care license during the investigation, Connolly said.

She remains free pending the April 27 arraignment.

Officers from the Grafton and Northbridge police departments assisted in the investigation, Connolly said.

Let's not rush to judgement. I have known this woman since she was a child - I find the allegations quite hard to believe.

I am not rushing to judgement. I have never met this woman-I find that human beings are capable of anything. I hope the baby fully recovers.

I have known this woman since childhood, and she is a very loving, giving person. Like Jim, I find these allegations very hard to believe, and I'm sure there is more to this story than what is written.

It NEVER ceases to amaze me how much misinformation the news people can put out there. Those who know April, know just how preposterous these charges are. April has over 25 years of child care between baby sitting, and raising her own children. April has two amazing grown children, and two of the happiest younger children you will ever meet. What is being suggested by these charges is simply NOT possible. They say, "where there's smoke, there's fire." The point, this lady has over 25 yrs without even a single hint of smoke.

Tom, would you suggest that the media not report that a person faces such charges, based solely on the fact that she, like virtually everyone in life, has people who support her and don't believe them? Seems to me if there's misinformation, your beef is with the folks who filed the charges, not the people who report it.

I have no problem with news being reported. But check out Ryan Windmer on Google. This gentleman was convicted in Ohio of murder. The evidence was, as is believed by his defense team, nothing more than "what was reported." And it is commonly believed that between what was "in the news" and the lack of another reasonable explanation, is why he was found guilty.

I just want to remind everyone that I am merely reporting the facts as they were given to me by the DA. She deserves and will receive her day in court and time will tell.
